The Native Hands Co-op is a project of the Catholic Charities of Gallup.
The Native Hands Cooperative through the Catholic Indian Center will provide new and innovative services designed to begin to change a systemic problem of economic exploitation of the Native American artisans living in and around the Gallup, New Mexico. While making programs available to anyone, regardless of race, tribe or creed who wish to participate, the Native Hands Co-op will be structured to serve the many local Native Americans who desire to increase there independence by developing their artistic, educational and entrepreneurial capabilities.
Specifically, the project will assist Native American artists to establishes a broader and more lucrative market for their goods and ultimately develop a successful small business operation capable of supporting themselves and their families. In order to reach that goal, Native Hands Co-op will provide remedial educational programs, a mentor/trainee program for artistic development, marketing and a co-op store.
Acknowledging that there are many reasons for or causes of poverty, the Native Hands Co-op program will develop services and that increase opportunities for participation in the program and the success of its PARTICAPANTS. We will have workshops on parenting, domestic violence, independent living, sales techniques and other topics as needed.
The project will create social justice through its commitment to help to Native Artists receive payment for their work that reflects its true value: through its efforts to help artisans of different tribes and cultures to work together; through its intent to exclude no one from participation; through its hope to reduce racism by developing relationships among people of various back grounds.
